Situated in the heart of Newport City, South Wales, this project needed extensive renovation. The hotel offers 150 bedrooms, restaurant and bar with roof top terrace and a conference centre off the main reception.
The Mercure group wanted the hotel to have a theme related to the city to be incorporated into the design fabric.
We based the overall design on the Newport Transporter Bridge. Opened in 1906, designed by the French engineer Ferdinand Arnodin. This iconic landmark was fitting, and the theme was utilised in the design of the artwork and design features around the hotel.
Renowned artist Caroline Rees was asked to commission the main piece of artwork which depicts the Transporter Bridge and is displayed in the main reception and applied in the manifestation in the conference suite and suite bedrooms.
The Newport Transporter Museum kindly allowed us to use their archive of photographs of the bridge being built which can be seen on every floor in the lift lobbies.
Being housed in the tallest building in Newport this hotel has made its mark on the Newport Skyline.
